Miffa Salter

Miffa has over a decade of experience across the public, private and voluntary sectors, including extensive experience of engaging stakeholders. Her work has focused predominantly on the design, development and management of urban areas, with a particular interest in ‘public’ and/or ‘client’ involvement in public sector decision making processes. She is the founding director of urbancanda, an independent practice specialising in stakeholder engagement; organisational change; and, policy research.

After graduating with first class honours from the London School of Economics in 1990, Miffa went on to research the management of planning services, focusing on the impact of the competitive tendering regime of the Thatcher administration. In 1996, Miffa joined the Civic Trust as the Head of Research and Marketing. 

Following two years at the Trust, Miffa was seconded to the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) for a year to work as part of the Urban Task Force team. At the same time, she joined the Office for Public Management.

Recent work has involved working with a range of clients including central government departments (ODPM; DCMS; DoH; and DEFRA); voluntary sector bodies such as the Prince’s Foundation for Architecture and Groundwork UK. Miffa has a current and long standing relationship with a number of local authorities and Housing Associations and has completed a three month secondment with the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA).

Miffa has taught on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the Architecture Association; the London School of Economics; Oxford University and the University of Westminster. and is retained as a facilitator by the Science Museum’s Dana Centre which seeks to widen public access to scientific debate.
